Automatic Transmission Diagnostics

The periodic diagnostics of the automatic transmission is extremely important, as the safety of the car driver and passengers depends on its faultless operation. If you crashed your car because the automatic transmission broke down, take advantage of scrap removal in pickering.

The motorist practically does not interfere with the work of the transmission, so a great responsibility lies on the automatic transmission repair shop, which is responsible for its diagnostics, repair and maintenance.

Before knowing what is the diagnosis of the automatic transmission, it is necessary to understand its purpose and principle of operation.

The automatic transmission (automatic transmission gearbox) is an element of the car transmission, transmitting torque from the engine to the driving axle.

The transmission provides the transmission of power from the engine to the drive wheels. Depending on external driving conditions, it changes the traction and speed when driving forward, makes it possible to reverse the car, can be used to brake the car more effectively, hold it back when driving uphill or downhill, ensures the engine is started and stops the car when the engine is running.

The automatic transmission is a complex mechanism consisting of four main elements: the mechanical part, the torque converter, the pump, and the control system.

The mechanical part is a set of planetary mechanisms and clutches designed to engage the necessary connections in the planetary mechanism. The clutch function is performed by the torque converter, through which the torque is transmitted from the engine to the input shaft of the gearbox. The torque converter is connected to the engine by means of a disc attached to the engine crankshaft. The use of a flexible disc compensates for axial play caused by thermal expansion or wear of metal parts. It is these faults that the diagnostics reveals.

A separate device is a pump. It is installed in automatic transmission and provides it with necessary oil volume and pressure. Here, too, diagnostics can detect abnormalities.

The automatic transmission control system also includes a hydraulic control unit, which is located in the box itself, as well as the automatic transmission control unit, which is either located separately or combined with the engine control system. Only instrumental diagnostics will show the serviceability of this system.

The automatic transmission is based on the following principle. The accelerator pedal, when pressed, passes through different positions, on which the position of the throttle valve depends (accordingly, the speed of the car changes). A specific program used in the automatic transmission disengages one gear and engages another. Thanks to this program, the transmission, depending on the position of the accelerator pedal and the speed of the car, automatically raises or lowers gears.

Diagnostics of the automatic transmission is a complex measure for determining its performance and allows identifying exactly which component of this complex device is not working. The symptoms of malfunctioning automatic transmission are: lack of movement, jerks during shifting, reduction of travel efficiency and jerks while driving. According to external manifestations of abnormal work of the automatic transmission, when no diagnostics have been carried out yet, it is very difficult to establish the true cause of the malfunction, to name the component of the automatic transmission that is not functioning.

For example, a car is twitching at the moment of shift, but automatic transmission diagnostics shows a faulty ABS sensor, which transmits data about the car’s speed. Although the ABS sensor is not related to the automatic transmission, it was diagnosed as having an impact on its operation.

Diagnosing the automatic transmission involves a process approach. Only a correct sequential analysis of all the causes that may cause malfunction of the automatic transmission and all its components, can lead to success in diagnosing the automatic transmission and subsequently eliminating the malfunction.

Diagnostics of the automatic transmission is carried out by means of a special scan of the car control system. The most reliable automatic transmission diagnostics results.
